ROUNZ (CEOs Kim Myung-sup and Kim Se-min), the eyewear virtual fitting commerce company and an ESTsoft subsidiary, announced on the 31st that 2022 revenue grew 30% year on year to a record high, bringing cumulative revenue since launch to KRW 27 billion.
ROUNZ, which brought AI technology to the existing eyewear industry, began with the 'ROUNZ' virtual fitting app that lets people try on eyewear realistically with a smartphone. It is now leading innovation in the eyewear industry by building an O2O omnichannel in partnership with opticians nationwide, so frames bought online after a virtual try-on can be fitted with prescription lenses.
Having started as a B2C business, ROUNZ entered the B2B business in earnest last year to build its O2O omnichannel. At the heart of that B2B business was the 'optician delivery' system, which sends eyewear bought in the ROUNZ app to a nearby partner optician where the customer can buy lenses directly. This let ROUNZ resolve the inconvenience caused by regulations prohibiting online sales of prescription lenses, while offering a new business model that lets it grow alongside existing opticians.
As a result, ROUNZ's 'optician delivery' orders rose sharply year on year and the number of opticians wanting to partner grew rapidly. Partner opticians grew from 280 in 2021 to about 600 today, more than doubling in a year, as ROUNZ steadily built cases of shared growth in which partner opticians improved their own results, persuading the market.
ROUNZ's optician partnership policy is being strengthened further. It recently began providing 'ROUNZ Mirror', a virtual fitting device, in earnest so its technology can be used easily in offline stores too. About six months into the policy, some 100 opticians have already adopted 'ROUNZ Mirror', with more than 600,000 uses by visiting customers.
The ROUNZ app is also the only Korean virtual fitting service featured on Apple Korea's website, thanks to its distinctive technology, and maintains a high App Store rating of 4.7. By offering a virtual try-on experience almost identical to the real thing, it has kept product return rates in single digits — contributing to cumulative app downloads of 810,000 and more than 200,000 sign-ups.
ROUNZ is also diversifying, including launching private brand (PB) products. ROUNZ-branded frames passed 15,000 units sold in 2022, and its lenses were stocked by more than 500 stores within ten months of launch, winning recognition in the market.
ROUNZ CEO Kim Myung-sup said: "Aggressive business development last year delivered our highest revenue since ROUNZ began," adding, "In 2023 we will focus on raising Series B investment to expand our online-offline business in earnest, and it will be a year of growing together with partner opticians nationwide through close collaboration."
